Return rates in 2022 were about 14 percent higher than the year and some retailers are taking a carrot-or-stick approach to reduce the amount of unwanted merchandise they have to process. Amazon.com is warning consumers about products with high return rates and offers free returns on items dropped at preferred locations.

Retailers Using Stricter Return Policies — Will Customers Turn Away?

Return rates are up in retail recently, both in-store and for e-commerce, and retailers are setting new stricter return policies, as reported by Forbes in an overview on this year’s returns environment.
