Tesco looks to supplier cuts as it aims to lower prices faster than rivals

Tesco is leaning on suppliers to pass on cost savings as it strives to cut prices faster than its rivals. The grocery giant met suppliers on Thursday and made clear that it wanted to lead the way on price cuts as it described the market as moving “from inflation to deflation”, according to The Sunday Times. The grocer highlighted the 50% drop in wholesale electricity prices, a 22% in plastic PET packaging prices and a 84% plummet in freight costs, within its presentation to suppliers.

John Lewis boss Sharon White has cautioned that criminals have a “licence to shoplift” following a rise in cases spurred by the cost-of-living crisis. The chairwoman has called for better protection from threats and abuse for store employees in England after a change to the law in Scotland. Sydney startup RecycleSmart raises $1 million on Birchal

Sydney-based waste recycling service RecycleSmart has raised $1.04 million through the crowdfunding platform Birchal. Co-founded by Giorgio Baracchi and Marco Prayer in 2019, the company picks up hard-to-recycle waste from households and sorts and transfers them to specialist recycling partners such as Mobile Muster, APR Plastics and the Red Cross. The company accepts soft plastics, clothes, shoes, e-waste and unwanted clothing which will be picked up for $5 a bag and up to two bags per pick up.

Boohoo suppliers have credit insurance cut

Credit insurer Allianz Trade has slashed cover for Boohoo suppliers, which could hit the online retailer’s cashflow. Cover has been cut by an average of 50%, with some suppliers to the fast fashion retailer having their coverage level cut to zero from September, according to The Sunday Times. It follows credit insurers cutting cover for fellow fast fashion giant Asos in May.
