As labour shortages endure, retailers must look to automate cash handling

While the world may slowly be returning to normal in the post-pandemic era, retailers worldwide continue to face labour shortages in customer-facing roles. A recent study by Deloitte found that 74 per cent of executives heading major global retail companies expect shortages in customer-facing positions. Wesfarmers posts $2.5 billion in profits, cautions rising cost pressures

Listed conglomerate Wesfarmers has reported tax-paid profit reached $2.5 billion in FY23 as operating conditions and consumer behaviours continued to normalise. The company’s retail business comprises Bunnings, Officeworks, and Kmart Group which in turn includes Target and Catch. For the year to June 30, group sales rose 18.2 per cent to $43.5 billion while tax-paid profits reached $2.5 billion, up 48.8 per cent and EBIT of $3.8 billion, up 6.3 per cent.

Lovisa pushes ahead with global expansion as profits rise

Australian fashion jewellery chain Lovisa is continuing with its global expansion after profits jumped 20 per cent for the full year. Sales reached $596.5 million – up 33.1 per cent – with comparable store sales up by 6.3 per cent. Tax-paid profit rose 20.1 per cent to $68.2 million. According to the Evening Standard , an insolvency court approved a restructuring plan, meaning the company can rent the 38 unprofitable stores at risk of shutting and pay lower business rates. The business plan, presented by FRP Advisory and Jones Day, means the retailer will only pay 8.6p for each pound owed to its landlords and local councils for its unprofitable shops.
