NRF: Electronics and Demographic Changes Drive Back-to-School Spending Trends

The 2022 back-to-school season will likely avoid being negatively impacted by the weight of inflation, according to data from the National Retail Federation (NRF) presented at its 2022 Back-to-School Trends webinar. Changing demographics and the lingering impact of COVID-19 will have a bigger effect, but the overall results are expected to be on par with what retailers saw in 2021 — about $37 billion in back-to-school (BTS) and $73.9 billion in back-to-college (BTC) spending.

Wow! U.S. added 528,000 jobs in July

The strong labor market remained that way in July with employers adding 528,000 jobs, according to the Labor Department. The national unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent, matching the 50-year low set right before the outset of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Retail workers saw bump in pay even after inflation

The average worker’s pay shrank 1.2 percent between Dec. 2019 and June 2022 when inflation was factored in. Retail and hospitality were the two industries where workers came slightly out ahead of the rate of inflation. Retail workers’ pay was up 0.2 percent during the period, according to an analysis of Labor Department statistics by Jason Furman, an economics professor at Harvard University and a former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.
