Food prices drive inflation higher

Food prices rose 0.8 percent in September, with produce up 1.6 percent and cereal and baked goods up 0.9 percent., according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Food prices on the whole were up 11.2 percent from the same month last year. Overall inflation rose 0.4 percent in September, 8.2 percent higher than the same time in 2021.

Uniqlo operator posts record annual profit despite China slump

Japan’s Fast Retailing Co, owner of clothing brand Uniqlo, reported a record full-year profit on Thursday despite a continuing slump in China, its biggest overseas market. Operating profit was 297.3 billion yen ($2.02 billion) in the 12 months through August compared with 249 billion yen a year earlier. That surpassed the company’s guidance and the consensus forecast of 291 billion yen, according to the average of 12 analyst estimates from Refinitiv.
