Aldi reclaims title as UK’s cheapest supermarket

Aldi has reclaimed its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for November, overtaking Lidl.

A basket of shopping from the discounter was found to be over £20 cheaper than its equivalent at Waitrose in the Which? monthly cheapest supermarket price comparison.

The consumer group also found Aldi was £12.77 cheaper than Morrisons and £11.02 lower than Sainsbury’s.

Last month, Lidl overtook it’s German rival as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, ending a 16-month run from the discounter.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Christmas can be an expensive time for everyone, with gifts to buy and families to feed.

“We’re thrilled that at such a crucial time Which? has officially named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket demonstrating our commitment to providing our customers with high quality food at everyday low prices.”

The news comes as Which? named Aldi the cheapest supermarket to buy a Christmas dinner this year.

Looking at the cost of Christmas dinner staples such as turkey, pigs in blankets and Christmas pudding, the discounter was found to be 4p more affordable than Lidl and £18 cheaper than the priciest grocer.
