The pilot scheme in the South Wales metro area involves 90 different retailers, many of them convenience stores, which Transport for Wales (TfW), says is designed to make travelling easier.

David O’Leary, TfW’s commercial and customer experience director, said: “This is the very first time in the UK that rail customers will be able to buy their tickets in their local convenience store and it also gives customers the added choice of purchasing with cash, especially if their local station does not have a ticket office or only has a self-service machine that accepts cards only.”

Stores that will offer tickets include K and S Newsagents in Crosskeys, Anthuvan Local Store in Barry Docks, Khan Food Stores at Cardiff Central station, the Corner Shop in Mountain Ash, Abertillery News in Abergavenny, and stores from the Bargain Booze, Lifestyle Express and Premier groups.

The stores will begin selling the tickets on 24 January.
