Greggs on a roll as it targets more UK shop openings

Greggs has “performed well” at the start of its financial year as it targets more shop openings across the UK.

The sausage roll maker posted 7.4% like-for-like sales growth in the first 19 weeks of 2024 thanks to continued “good progress across all channels”, including delivery sales, evening trade, and app engagement.

Total sales for the 19-week period hit £693m, up from £609m the previous year.

Greggs has opened 64 new shops in 2024 so far, featuring new locations such as Embankment underground station, as well as four in Tesco, and three in Sainsbury’s.

Earlier this month, the chain hit a milestone of 2,500 shops for the first time.

The group said it remains confident in achieving its target of 140 and 160 new shops throughout the financial year.

It added that its new range of over-ice drinks, such as coffee and lemonades, was performing well and that it plans to expand the offering from its current 300 shops to up to 700 in the coming months.

“Pizza boxes have been in strong growth following a dedicated campaign and hot food continues to perform well, with our Southern Fried Chicken Goujons and Southern Fried Potato Wedges proving popular with customers,” Greggs said.

The business is also expanding its operations with two new sites in the Midlands, which are set to become operational by late 2026 or early 2027, and will enhance its manufacturing and logistics capabilities to help it meet growing demand and support its expansion plans.
