Reports: Amazon Go to Hit the Suburbs with Locations in Washington State and California

1amazongoms

Amazon is bringing its Amazon Go convenience store format to the suburbs with the launch of a location in Mill Creek, Wash. in the coming months, according to Business Insider, MarketWatch and other media outlets. The retailer also is planning an Amazon Go location in the Los Angeles metro area.

The move aims to take advantage of the fact that more shoppers are working from home, keeping them away from the city centers where most Amazon Go stores are currently located. The new shops will feature the same format, including the emphasis on grab-and-go items and everyday essentials as well as the cashierless checkout experience. The primary difference will be size: the suburban locations are planned at 6,000 square feet each, compared to the 450 to 2,700 square feet of existing urban stores.

The larger size won’t be a challenge: in early 2020, Amazon opened a 10,400-square-foot cashierless grocery store in Seattle. The store served as a proof-of-concept that the company’s Just Walk Out cashierless technology could work for larger, more complex store layouts as the cost of installation drops.

Amazon has been selling its Just Walk Out solution to other retailers since March 2020. Some of the more notable partners have included:

  • Starbucks, which opened a combination Amazon Go/Starbucks concept in New York City in late 2021, with a second planned for 2022;
  • Sainsbury’s, which has deployed a white label version of the cashierless solution at one of its London convenience stores where shoppers check out using the Sainsbury SmartShop app rather than the Amazon app; and
  • Hudson, which is using the technology to power an airport-based convenience store concept.
