Balenciaga creates $1800 bag resembling Lay’s potato chips

In what seems to be an attempt at viral fashion, Spanish luxury label Balenciaga has unveiled a new handbag that resembles a bag of Lay’s potato chips.

Dubbed “Lay’s-Branded Bag”, the accessory made its debut at Paris Fashion Week and is an official collaboration with US chips company Lay’s which promoted that bag on its social media accounts.

The rumoured retail price for the potato chip bag is USD$1800, a huge difference from a $3.99 pack of chips. However, the Lay’s Banded Bag is made from leather rather than aluminium foil.

Available in three colours – red, yellow, and blue – the potato chip clutches feature a simple top zip closure and a “Balenciaga Paris” text at the bottom.

Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia shared images of the label’s new collection on Instagram and has touted the bag as a “must-have.”

In June, Gvasalia was spotted holding a bag of Lay’s potato chips at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts graduate show, which went viral.

The novel bag received mixed reactions on social media:

@anellabennett comments on @diet_prada’s Instagram account:

“I’m pretty sure these designers are trolling us by now.”

“Balenciaga is a social experiment,” expressed @electric_perfume_.

On Lay’s official Instagram account, user @staterbros comments “It’s on fire!”

The Spanish label is no stranger to controversy, just like its “crocs heels” collection, and in August, it launched a $1790 accessory that resembles a trash bag.
