Myer has announced the closure of its Blacktown store in Sydney’s outer west, a move that follows the reduction of footprints of five other stores across Australia.

As the troubled department store retailer tries to reight-size its portfolio in the wake of consumers moving online to shop, Myer said the Blacktown store closure was the fifth under its Customer First Plan launched in January 2019. Since then it has closed stores located at Logan, Hornsby, Emporium and – most recently – Knox, last August.

“Today’s decision continues to deliver against our Customer First Plan and we will continue to make targeted improvements to our store network, reducing space and improving the offer for our loyal customers,” said Myer CEO John King in a statement issued on Friday.

He said that in reaching the decision, Myer had taken into account its strengthening online sales, as well as the number of Myer stores located in close proximity to the Blacktown store – including Castle Hill, Parramatta, Bankstown and Roselands.

“We thank our Blacktown team members for their service and contribution to the business and our Blacktown customers for their loyalty to the store – and we trust they will continue to shop with us at our nearby stores or online.”

The last day of trading at Myer Blacktown will be Sunday April 3.

As well as the recent closures, Myer has reduced the floor space at its stores in Belconnen, Cairns, Morley and Highpoint and a similar project is underway at the company’s Toowoomba store.
