Wegmans Confirms New Store in Charlotte, North Carolina
April 16, 2024
Wegmans Food Markets, the popular New York-based supermarket chain, has confirmed its plans to open a new store in south Charlotte, North Carolina. The store will be located on North Community Road, on the east side of Ballantyne. The developer, Northwood Investors LLC, announced the news, revealing that Wegmans aims to open its doors in the third quarter of 2026.
The decision comes after years of speculation and demand from locals. “We’ve received hundreds of requests from locals asking for a store in their area, and we’ve spent years looking for exactly the right location,” said Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning for Wegmans.
This new addition to Charlotte’s grocery scene will add to the competitive landscape, which currently boasts over 760 stores, including major players like Publix, Lidl, Lowes Foods, Walmart, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion.
Wegmans opened its first store in North Carolina four years ago in the Raleigh area. Since then, the supermarket chain has garnered a dedicated following, with fans eagerly awaiting its expansion into Charlotte. The news of the upcoming store in Ballantyne was met with excitement on social media platforms, with many expressing their joy and anticipation.
The upcoming Wegmans store in Ballantyne will span 110,000 square feet and feature traditional departments such as produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese. Additionally, the store will include a market café with both indoor and outdoor seating options.
The new store’s location is strategic, being less than a half-mile away from Ballantyne’s mixed-use development, The Bowl at Ballantyne. This development houses popular establishments like Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, North Italia, Flower Child, Harriet’s Hamburgers, and Roosters.
While many are excited about Wegmans’ arrival, some have expressed disappointment with the chosen location. Regardless, the addition of Wegmans to Charlotte’s grocery offerings is highly anticipated by many.
In North Carolina, Wegmans currently operates four stores in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, West Cary, and Wake Forest, with plans for another store in Holly Springs. Overall, Wegmans has 111 locations across eight East Coast states, from Massachusetts to Virginia.
