Dollar General says DG Markets are good for rural communities
June 21, 2023
Dollar General plans to expand its DG Market format, which sells fresh produce, meat and dairy products, to 5,000 stores by the end of the year. The chain asserts that many of these stores are in food deserts and need what it sells. Others, such as Sean Park, program manager with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, think the format’s presence in rural communities hurts local grocery stores. Dollar General says that 80 percent of its stores are in small towns, including many that lack a grocery store.
