H-E-B (San Antonio, Texas) has announced its plans to rebuild its longest-standing location in Austin, according to a company press release. Its South Congress store will be demolished in February 2022 and a temporary store will open in the nearby Twin Oaks Shopping Center until the newly built store is complete in about two years.

The new store is planned to be more than 145,000 square feet and will house three levels, including three levels of above-ground parking with 600 spaces. It will include a True Texas BBQ restaurant as well as indoor and outdoor dining; an outdoor stage for live performances is also in the works.

H-E-B Group Vice President Central Texas Cathy Harm says, “Our vision has always been to create a store that our customers will be proud of, an iconic location that reflects the personality and vibrancy of the South Congress community … This store is an important part of this neighborhood, and we hope this new design conveys the deep gratitude we have for our loyal customers who have supported our business for more than 60 years.”

The original store opened in 1957 and is currently set at 69,000 square feet.
