Oakland Taco Bell Locations Close Indoor Dining Amid Safety Concerns

Taco Bell customers in Oakland are facing a change in their dining experience. Recent reports confirm that multiple Taco Bell restaurants in the city have closed their indoor dining areas. KRON4 reporters visited two locations, one at 3535 35th Ave. and another at 630 Hegenberger Road, and confirmed the shutdown of their dining rooms.

The decision to close the dining rooms came as a response to safety concerns. According to an employee at one of the affected locations, incidents of troublemaking prompted the closure. This move leaves customers with only one option: utilizing the drive-thru.

Unfortunately for pedestrians, even walking up to the drive-thru window is not an option, as they are turned down. This limitation adds to the frustration expressed by some community members, who believe it’s unfair for people to be restricted to drive-thru service only.

“We got a whole bunch of businesses bouncing because they’re not safe no more,” one Oakland resident said in his car outside of the Taco Bell. “It shouldn’t happen… the situation has got to change, period.”

City officials like Council Members Dan Kalb and Noel Gallo suggest that these fast-food establishments are becoming targets for criminals. Kalb points out the proximity of these businesses to freeway on-ramps, making them vulnerable spots for quick getaways after committing crimes.

The closures of Taco Bell’s indoor dining spaces follow a pattern seen in other fast-food chains in Oakland. Last year, Raising Cane’s and more recently In-N-Out cited safety concerns as the reason for closing their dining rooms.

In response to inquiries, Taco Bell emphasized its commitment to providing a safe environment for both customers and staff. The franchise owner has been working with local law enforcement and implementing security measures to address safety issues.

While there are still two other Taco Bell locations in Oakland, it remains uncertain whether they have also closed their indoor dining areas. As the community grapples with safety concerns, the fate of these dining spaces reflects larger challenges facing the city.
