Gap Introduces Retail Fulfillment Service Utilizing its 13 Distribution Centers

Gap has launched a fulfillment service for retailers called GPS Platform Service, offering omnichannel fulfillment using Gap’s nationwide distribution network and handling tasks including delivery to customers or stores, returns initiation and processing at its fulfillment centers.

“For the first time, we are making Gap Inc.’s fast, flexible and highly automated logistics and fulfillment network available to brands of all sizes through GPS Platform Services,” said Kevin Kuntz, SVP of Global Logistics Fulfillment at Gap in a LinkedIn post. “Reach out if you are ready to scale your operations and grow your brand.”

GPS Platform Service utilizes 13 distribution centers in North America with a total footprint of more than 9 million square feet. The network includes more than 9,000 logistics workers who process 1 billion units annually and who can get an item from the dock to in-stock in less than 24 hours. The service is capable of handling ecommerce fulfillment, B2B wholesale and retail stores distribution.

Gap is providing a self-service portal with API integrations to Shopify, Amazon and “other major commerce platforms,” as well as integration with “major post-purchase experience platforms.”

Gap is the latest retailer to utilize its national distribution network to launch a fulfillment service. One of the largest offerings in this area is Walmart GoLocal, which surpassed 1 million deliveries during its first year. The service also has expanded to provide ecommerce and fulfillment solutions for independent and mid-sized grocers through a partnership with Cognetry Labs.

American Eagle also entered this space in late 2021 through its acquisitions of AirTerra and Quiet Logistics. The companies have helped American Eagle bolster is own supply chain while continuing to independently serve other retailers.

Amazon, which offers logistics services through its Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) program, made another splash in April 2022 when it launched the $1 billion Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund (AIIF), a venture fund supporting innovation in customer fulfillment, logistics and the supply chain.
