Ford Recall: Nearly 140K Vehicles Affected by Oil Pressure Issue

January 10, 2024

A Ford recall is pulling back almost 140,000 units of its Focus sedans and hatchbacks (2016 to 2018 models) and EcoSport SUVs (2018 to 2022 models). This is due to a problem that might cause a loss of oil pressure, increasing the potential for car accidents.

The issue arises from a potential failure of the oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner in these vehicles. If either of these parts fails, it could lead to a drop in oil pressure in the engine. A significant reduction in oil pressure could cause an engine stall or a loss of power-breaking assist. Both of these scenarios drastically increase the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice, and it’s estimated that 139,730 vehicles could be affected by this problem. Ford has committed to making it right for its customers, and dealerships will be offering free replacements of the potentially defective oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt.

What does this mean for Ford vehicle owners? Well, if you’re driving a Focus (2016-2018) or an EcoSport (2018-2022), you might be receiving a notification in the mail. Ford is expected to start sending out owner notification letters on Feb. 13 explaining the safety risk associated with this issue. A second notice will be sent once the replacement parts are available at dealerships.

If you own one of these vehicles and want to get ahead of the mail, you can reach out to Ford directly. Ford’s customer service can be contacted at 1-866-436-7332, and the reference number for this recall is 23S64.

For additional safety information, the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline can be reached at 1-888-327-4236. You can also visit www.nhtsa.gov to learn more about this and other vehicle recalls. This is a serious issue that Ford and the NHTSA are taking very seriously, so don’t delay if you’re driving one of the potentially affected vehicles. Your safety could be at stake.
