October 24, 2023

LEGO Icons has revealed its latest creation – the Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, inspired by Frank Herbert’s popular science fiction series, and Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptations, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two. Comprising 1,369 pieces, the two-and-a-half foot long model features functioning airplane blades that flap, retract, and rotate 180 degrees, as well as movable landing gear.

Accompanying the ornithopter are minifigures of the film’s main characters, including:

  • Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides
  • Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica
  • Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck
  • Zendaya’s Chani
  • Oscar Isaac’s Leto Atreides
  • Sharon Duncon-Brewster’s Liet Kynes
  • Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho
  • Baron Vladimir Harkonnen

Amber Sheppo, vice president of Consumer Products and Partnerships for Legendary Entertainment, said, “The unique and creative design of this product perfectly aligns with both the Dune and LEGO spirit.”

The official movie adaptation of Dune 2 is set to release March 15, 2024, and it’s no coincidence that this date comes shortly after the release of the Lego Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter. This strategic move will not only help bolster sales for the retail toy giant, and synergizes with the hype of the upcoming movie, and the movie will also help add more interest into the merchandise.

Additionally, according to Toy Ark, McFarlane Toys has released new action figures in anticipation of the upcoming Dune movie installment. The film was initially slated for release later this year, aligning the toy release with the usual lead time for trailer characters ahead of the premiere. However, the film has been delayed until at least spring of next year.

The situation mirrors what happened with the first part, when the movie was released directly on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A wide variety of action figure sets are now available from McFarlane Toys, with twos and fours, and even single packs featuring different variants of the core cast.
