Vacancies surge as labour shortages cripple the retail industry

As retailers begin recruitment drives ahead of the peak holiday shopping season, new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows there were 46,100 job vacancies available in retail in August. This is an increase of 5800 vacancies – or 14.4 per cent – compared to May this year. Overall, job vacancies declined 2.1 per cent but the retail sector still struggles to attract workers.

Bed Bath & Beyond Posts 28% Sales Decrease, Prepares for Further Drops as it Right-Sizes Inventory

Bed Bath & Beyond continued to struggle in Q2 2022 with the retailer’s sales falling 28% in the quarter, which ended Aug. 27. The retailer expects a further 20% decline in comparable sales for the back half of the year as it focuses on heavy promotions to moved merchandise. Buybuy BABY , which has been a bright spot for the retailer in the past, also posted a comparable sales decrease in the high teens.

Online sales drive profits for Toy ‘R’ Us

Children’s goods retailer Toys ‘R’ Us says it has achieved significant and sustained organic growth from both e-commerce and wholesale segments, relaunching its website in the UK ahead of Christmas. For the year to July 31, sales from continuing operations were up 74 per cent to $37.9 million while gross profit rose 93 per cent to $8 million. Total e-commerce invoiced sales grew 98 per cent to $26 million.
