Mislabeling of Popular Chocolate Product Leads to Recall
December 4, 2023
Manischewitz, a leading candy maker, is recalling Manischewitz Dark Chocolate Coins because the product may contain undeclared milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they eat these products.
The recall comes days before Hanukkah, when the popular coins are commonly consumed.
The FDA reports that the safety recall was initiated after the company was notified by its quantity control department that a limited number of bags labeled as “Dark Chocolate Coins” actually contained Milk Chocolate Coins, which have milk allergen that is not declared on the label. All dairy Milk Chocolate Coins are wrapped in Gold Foil within a Blue Netting, while all non-dairy Dark Chocolate Coins are wrapped in Silver Foil within a Red Netting.
Packages may have gold (dairy) coins in the “dark-chocolate tagged” bag. Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to check whether there are gold foil coins in the dark chocolate bags and discontinue use immediately. Customers can return the product for credit or refund.
The potential mislabeling by Manischewitz relates to lot code 2283 and UPC code 072700200387 or the display box UPC code 072700200356.
The FDA claims to have immediately informed all retailers that purchased this lot code about the recall. They were instructed to inspect their inventory or remove any potentially affected product on their shelves.
Manischewitz distributed its Dark Chocolate Coins to stores nationwide, especially to the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions, during the weeks of Sept. 26, 2023, through Nov. 28, 2023.
The recall comes just days after a Thanksgiving “urgent food recall” when another company discovered some of its gift baskets included raspberry cookies that contained hazelnuts — a potentially deadly allergen to those allergic to nuts.
Recalls are issued if there are concerns that a food product may be harmful in some way. Consumers who have questions may contact the company at customercare@kayco.com or by phone at 718-369-4600 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
