Mercedes-Benz Announces EV Charging Stations Across the US

Atlanta is now home to an innovative EV charging station that sets a new benchmark in rapid fast-charging thanks to Mercedes-Benz. Debuting today, this station marks the inaugural North American location in the Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging (HPC) network.

The Mercedes-Benz station features a fast-charging system supplied by ChargePoint, a key player in EV charging solutions. Delivering an impressive charging capacity of up to 500 kW, this system surpasses the charging speed capability of most modern EVs — a testament to Mercedes’ commitment to future-forward infrastructure. Currently, stations will be limited to only 400 kW for the time being.

To provide some context, the peak charging rate currently offered by other charging networks, including Electrify America, is typically rated at 350 kW. This introduction by ChargePoint significantly raises the bar in the charging infrastructure landscape. Porsche was one of the first pioneers in this space as one of a select few brands that can harness charging rates of up to 350 kW.

Boasting more than just quick-charging capabilities, the station also showcases comfort amenities, making it a pleasant pit stop for drivers. This blend of innovation, convenience, and connectivity elevates the EV charging experience to a different level. Mercedes-Benz HPC is not only raising the bar but also reimagining the future of EV charging infrastructure and accessibility.

ChargePoint’s new “Power Block” system revolutionizes EV charging with up to five “Power Modules.” These modules dynamically distribute power among vehicles charging, minimizing time spent at stations. Mercedes further enhances this with an intelligent charge management system that charges each vehicle at its highest possible rate.

All EV drivers can use these High Power Charging (HPC) hubs. For added convenience, Mercedes drivers can reserve a charging slot via the “me Charge” service. In addition, Mercedes will continue offering the Plug & Charge protocol, automatically initiating charging and handling validation and payment — echoing the convenience of Tesla’s Supercharger network. These advancements streamline the EV charging process and lay the foundation for a more sustainable, efficient, and accessible EV industry.

This advanced charging station redefines the standards of EV charging speed. Mercedes-Benz HPC aims to deploy more than 400 charging stations across the United States. But it doesn’t stop there, as “the Mercedes HPC site, in Atlanta, is one of three opening today: the others are in Chengdu, China, and Mannheim, Germany. Ultimately, the luxury maker expects to have 10,000 stations open globally by 2030.”

The vision is to establish an extensive network that offers universal access, welcoming drivers of all EV brands.
