JetBlue CEO Stepping Down Ahead of Spirit Airlines Merger Ruling

January 9, 2024

JetBlue Airways recently announced that its CEO, Robin Hayes, will relinquish his post in the coming month. Joanna Geraghty, who currently serves as the chief operating officer, will succeed Hayes as the top executive, making her the first woman to lead a major U.S. airline.

Hayes’ departure follows JetBlue’s ongoing effort to procure Spirit Airlines, a budget airline company. This projected $4 billion merger is expected to aid JetBlue’s growth and stiffen its competition with larger contenders like Delta and United.

However, this merger has stirred controversy and was challenged by the U.S. Department of Justice in a lawsuit last year. A federal judge in Boston is anticipated to provide a verdict in the ensuing weeks, following a trial that concluded late last year.

Hayes, a veteran of the airline industry with over 30 years of experience, shared his resignation news via a company announcement. He stated that the demanding nature of his job had impacted his health and well-being. He further expressed his mixed feelings about leaving the company he cherishes. Yet, he emphasized the necessity of prioritizing his health.

Despite stepping down from his role as CEO, Hayes will retain his position on the company’s board of directors until Feb. 12. Following his resignation, he will continue to serve JetBlue as a strategic advisor. Concurrently, Geraghty will be introduced to the board.

Geraghty’s tenure at JetBlue spans nearly two decades, which represents most of the airline’s existence. During her time, JetBlue extended its operations internationally and launched a business class.

However, JetBlue, primarily operating in crowded airspace like New York and Florida, has faced some struggles lately. As the new CEO, Geraghty is tasked with steadying the course. Should the Department of Justice fail to halt the merger with Spirit, she will supervise this process. Part of JetBlue’s plan involves transforming Spirit’s distinctive yellow, tightly filled planes into its own more comfortable configurations.

Having been appointed as COO in 2018, Geraghty has overseen various aspects of JetBlue’s operations, including its expanding network and revenue management.
