California has adopted a law that requires large retailers to create a gender-neutral toy section, reports the Los Angeles Times. The law, signed by Gov. Gavin Newson, will take effect in 2024.

It requires retail stores with 500 or more employees to merchandise some toys and childcare products in gender-neutral areas. Stores are still free to sell other toys and childcare items in boy and girls sections as well.

According to sponsor of the bill Assemblyman Evan Low, it represents a shift away from marketing kids’ products under traditional gender designations. Target removed its boys and girls toy sections in 2015, as have other retailers.
