Air Fryers Sold at Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, & More Recalled Due to Fire Risk
December 19, 2023
According to The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Empower Brands has announced the recall of over 300,000 PowerXL Air Fryers because of a burn hazard.
Two different PowerXL dual basket air fryer models manufactured in China — DUAF-10 and DUAF-005 — have been recalled for “posing a burn hazard.” Per Real Simple, “These egg-shaped air fryers have two baskets that can be used separately, or optionally combined into one large single basket, and it’s the combination of these baskets that poses a significant risk.” The CPSC’s announcement stated, “The plastic U-Channel connector used to optionally combine the two food baskets inside of the air fryers can break during use, posing a burn hazard.”
According to the CPSC, the two air fryers that have been recalled were sold in two different colors — black and cinnamon. They also have a silver label on the front that says “PowerXL” and a white label on the bottom of each appliance that states the model number. Both models were sold in various sizes. Real Simple stated, “The 10-quart DUAF-10 model is about 17 inches long by 16 inches wide by 12 1/2 inches tall, and weighs about 14 1/2 pounds, while the 9-quart DUAF-005 model is about 14 inches long by 13 inches wide by 15 inches tall, and weighs about 14 pounds.”
The products were sold online and in person at Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, and other stores across the nation from August 2021 until October 2023 for between $60 and $190.
This is not the first time the brand has been in the spotlight for selling products that pose a risk. In May, the company recalled 456,000 PowerXL electric waffle irons after finding that hot pieces of waffle or stuffing could be “expelled from the waffle maker during use or upon opening the product,” according to Newsweek.
Additionally, in June, Empower Brands recalled 469,000 PowerXL self-cleaning juicers in the U.S. after they were found to rupture when being used, “striking consumers and posing a laceration hazard,” or leaving small traces in juice, the report also highlighted.
Since the two PowerXl models went on the market, Empower Brands has received reports of it breaking while being used 41 times. This includes three instances of burns. As a result of the serious risk involved in using it, the CPSC has alerted consumers to immediately stop using these two PowerXL models and get in touch with Empower Brands to get all their money back.
