Belk Files for Chapter 11, Plans ‘One-Day Reorganization’

133-year-old department store chain Belk has formally filed for bankruptcy after announcing plans two weeks ago for an expedited “one-day reorganization.” In the court filing, the retailer cited the COVID-19 pandemic and “general market-related challenges” as primary catalysts of its recent decline. The reorganization plan, approved by a Houston bankruptcy court on Feb. 23, will see Belk continue normal operations at its 291 stores and online throughout the restructuring process.

NRF Forecasts Retail Sales Could Grow by up to 8.2% in 2021

Accelerating vaccine rollouts combined with pent-up consumer demand will drive 2021 U.S. retail sales to at least $4.33 trillion , according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). That total would represent a 6.5% increase over 2020, but sales could reach as high as $4.4 trillion , creating an 8.2% growth rate. Online sales, which are included in the forecasted totals, are expected to grow between 18% and 23% , based on a low estimate of $1.14 trillion and a high of $1.19 trillion.
