Lululemon hosts a dupe swap

May 8, 2023

The lululemon store at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles is offering its black Align High Rise Pant 25” to customers who bring in a knockoff (AKA dupe) of the item. “We saw it as a really fun way to play into something that is a real part of our culture, but in a way that really puts the focus back on the original,” said Nikki Neuburger, lululemon chief brand officer.

lululemon’s responds to “dupes”

In response to the rising popularity of dupe culture, athleisure giant lululemon is hosting a dupe swap event at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles this weekend. The event aims to address the trend of cheaper alternatives, or “dupes,” to household name and luxury brands, which have gained billions of views on social media platforms like TikTok.

At this one-time event, Lululemon is offering customers the opportunity to swap their knock-off items for an authentic pair of black Align High Rise Pant 25″.

Influencers promoted budget versions of the Align Pants

The Align Pants, known for their cult-like following and launch in 2015, have become one of the most frequently duplicated products showcased on TikTok. Influencers and users often compare genuine Align Pants with affordable alternatives, highlighting the similarities and cost savings. This shift in consumer behavior has given rise to the #dupe hashtag, which has amassed over 3.5 billion views on TikTok, indicating a growing interest in finding budget-friendly options.

Can lululemon win influencers back?

Lululemon’s Chief Brand Officer, Nikki Neuburger, stated that the company has been closely monitoring dupe culture and recognized it as an opportunity to engage with their audience in a fun and authentic way. The choice to hold the event in Los Angeles was strategic, as the city is known for its content creators and influencers. Lululemon plans to organize similar events in London, Shanghai, and Seoul to further connect with their global customer base.

While dupe culture poses challenges for brands, particularly in terms of legal protection and keeping up with copies of their designs, lululemon aims to embrace the trend by reclaiming their original product’s focus. To prevent customers from holding onto counterfeit items, lululemon will send the exchanged knock-offs to a textile recycling company.

The downsides of knock-offs

The prevalence of dupes has not gone unnoticed by e-commerce platforms like Amazon, which has implemented measures to combat counterfeit items. However, finding dupes from questionable sources remains possible, with some sellers capitalizing on the trend. Social media influencers are also leveraging dupes as a lucrative source of income through affiliate links and sponsored content.

Critics argue that dupe culture perpetuates a trend cycle that renders products obsolete within months, leading to an increase in impulse buying and a disregard for higher-quality items. However, certain legacy brands like Patagonia and Nike, which emphasize durability and sustainability, have managed to maintain their appeal amidst the dupe frenzy. Gen Z consumers, known for their conscious spending habits, are particularly drawn to brands that align with their values.

Staying authentic to outlast the trends

Despite the prevalence of dupes and the attention they receive on social media, lululemon continues to experience success with its authentic Align line. The company reports that the Align Pants remain their top-selling product, demonstrating the enduring loyalty of their customer base.

As dupe culture continues to shape consumer preferences, brands must navigate this trend and find innovative ways to engage with their audience. Lululemon’s dupe swap event is just one example of how companies are adapting to changing consumer behaviors in the retail industry.
