New USDA rules change labeling for genetically modified foods

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has instituted new rules intended to clarify whether foods contain ingredients that have been genetically modified. Foods previously labeled as containing “genetically modified organisms” (GMOs) will now be designated as “bioengineered.” The USDA created the new rules to provide a uniform labeling system that replaces a patchwork of state-directed labels.
