2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid: A Closer Look

April 23, 2024

Toyota has unveiled the 2024 Tacoma Hybrid, and it’s making waves in the midsize pickup segment. Following its bigger sibling, the Tundra, the Tacoma now offers a hybrid powertrain option, marking a first for midsize trucks. This redesign promises more power and enhanced off-road capabilities.

Under the hood, the Tacoma Hybrid features a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine producing 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 48-horsepower electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Despite the hybrid additions and a standard part-time four-wheel-drive system, the truck is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than seven seconds.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the hybrid model sees an improvement, with EPA estimates increasing from 20 mpg to 23 mpg combined. This efficiency boost is accompanied by performance enhancements, particularly in the TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims, which focus on off-road prowess.

The TRD Pro stands out with its 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires, adjustable 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass dampers, and off-road gear like electronically locking rear differentials and a terrain camera. It offers 11.5 inches of ground clearance and impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles.

On the other hand, the Trailhunter comes with Old Man Emu dampers, a snorkel intake, and additional underbody protection. Both trims deliver robust off-road performance, with the TRD Pro showcasing excellent bump absorption and handling on challenging terrains.

While the Tacoma Hybrid brings many improvements, there are some trade-offs to consider. The hybrid battery placement limits rear seat folding, affecting cargo flexibility. Additionally, the TRD Pro’s unique front seats reduce rear legroom, and its recessed front recovery hooks may pose challenges for attaching safety flags.

Lastly, the Tacoma Hybrid’s towing capacity sees a slight reduction, dropping from 6,400 pounds to 6,000 pounds. However, it offers a standard 2,400 watts of accessory power via 120-volt outlets in the bed and cabin.
