Apple Releases Its First Sports App

February 22, 2024

On Wednesday, Apple introduced a brand-new app called Apple Sports, which is free on the iPhone and delivers real-time scores, stats, and more.

According to CNN, this new app designed for speed and simplicity will give users access to live data from the NBA, NHL, and MLS, as well as many other leagues. This is the first time Apple is releasing an app in the sports space and comes out just before March Madness, offering real-time figures for both men’s and women’s NCAA basketball. Additional leagues, including the NFL and MLB, will be integrated gradually.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, said, “We created Apple Sports to give sports fans what they want — an app that delivers incredibly fast access to scores and stats.”

At launch, Apple Sports will be ad-free, providing fans with a straightforward and quick way to stay updated on their favorite teams and leagues. Users can personalize scoreboards within the app by following their favorite teams, tournaments, and leagues. Navigation between scores and upcoming games has been streamlined for ease of use. Additionally, users can delve into play-by-play details, team statistics, and live betting odds and seamlessly transition to the Apple TV app to watch games from Apple and affiliated streaming services. The app effortlessly syncs with favorites selected within the My Sports experience, encompassing Apple News and Apple TV.

In recent years, Apple has partnership up with a range of sports leagues, such as MLB and MLS, to stream games on its Apple TV+ platform. Meanwhile, competitor Amazon has secured exclusive rights to broadcast “Thursday Night Football” and an NFL game on Black Friday.

Even though Apple Sport can give users alerts on where a game is being shown, it will not steam games directly inside the app. However, it will navigate users to the right app to watch the games.

Sports have become more sought after by technology and media companies in recent times, especially to cater to a paying audience on these platforms.
