A Flight Attendant Strike for Better Pay and Conditions Is Underway

February 14, 2024

Flight attendants across Southern California and numerous airports nationwide staged demonstrations to push for improved wages and working environments. The protest, organized as part of a Worldwide Flight Attendant Day of Action, saw picketers gathering at Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, and Ontario International Airport.

Despite the demonstrations, flight operations are expected to proceed without disruptions. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, representing over 100,000 workers from various airlines including American, Alaska, Frontier, Southwest, and United, emphasized the importance of their cause.

“This is a fight for Flight Attendants and a war on corporate greed,” they said in a statement. “We fight for our role to be respected; we fight for our value as humans to be restored; and we fight for the job dedicated to the safety and comfort of the flying public.”

Flight attendants are advocating for better retirement benefits, increased flexibility in schedules, and compensation for all working hours. Currently, many flight attendants are not paid for the waiting time between flights or during the boarding process.

In a statement, the APFA highlighted the significance of flight attendants in the labor movement, emphasizing the need for fair treatment and compensation. They stressed the importance of jobs that offer living wages and essential benefits, as well as work rules that recognize their value as aviation workers.

While airlines like United, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines have acknowledged the protests, stating their commitment to negotiation, flight attendants continue to push for tangible improvements in their working conditions. The demonstration at LAX commenced at 11 a.m., with similar actions taking place at airports in Dallas, Seattle, Las Vegas, New York, San Diego, Portland, the U.K., and Guam.

Flight attendants play a crucial role in the aviation industry, often facing long hours and demanding situations. Their dedication to passenger safety and comfort is undeniable, yet they continue to struggle with inadequate compensation and working conditions. As they unite in solidarity for change, their efforts resonate not only within the industry but also among working families across the globe. It is a testament to their resilience and determination to secure a better future for themselves and their profession.
