The South Australia Parliament has passed new legislation and made revisions to its Shop Trading Hours Act.

Under the new law, Adelaide shops can open from 9am on Sunday morning and close at 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Shops can also operate until midnight, three days before Christmas.

Suburban shops can trade on Boxing Day between 11 am and 5 pm. This was previously only permitted for shops in the CBD.

Premier Peter Malinauskas described the amendments as “the biggest change in 20 years to the South Australia shop trading hours laws” for shoppers.

“Our ambition is to get these reforms, now that they’ve passed through the parliament, operating in the public as quickly as possible,” he told The Advertiser.

“This is sensible shop trading hours reform which strikes the right balance for workers, local small businesses and shoppers.”

The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association, which represents retail workers, said the organisation would work to ensure that workers’ rosters are not disrupted by these changes.
