Recent Automobile Recalls: A Quick Roundup

January 2, 2024

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a series of automobile recalls affecting millions of vehicles. Notably, this includes approximately 1 million Toyota cars and over 79,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles due to a fuel pump issue.

If you’re curious about whether your car is affected, consult the automotive recall databases or the NHTSA. The latter allows recalls to be searched using the vehicle identification number (VIN). Today, we will take a brief look at some of the major recalls announced between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1.

Toyota Recall – Air Bag Issues

Nearly a million (999,901 to be precise) Toyota vehicles are being recalled due to a short circuit risk in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, which could hinder the deployment of the front passenger air bag. Dealers will provide a free inspection and replacement of the OCS sensor, with notification letters slated to be sent to vehicle owners on Feb. 4, 2024.

Models affected by this recall include the Avalon and its hybrid variant, Camry and its hybrid variant, Corolla, RAV4 and its hybrid variant, and several Lexus models, among others.

Mercedes-Benz Recalls – Fuel Pump and Possible Fuel, Oil Leak

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 79,676 vehicles from 2021 to 2024 due to a potential shutdown of the fuel pump, which can result in a loss of drive power and increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, seven 2023 GLC 300, 2024 GLE 350, and GLE 450 SUVs are being recalled due to an inadequate seal, possibly causing fuel and oil leaks, creating a roadway hazard and increasing fire risk. Both recalls offer free dealer replacements of the affected parts, with owner notification letters expected in February 2024.

Kia Sorento Recall – Engine Issue

A total of 79,812 Kia Sorento SUVs from 2011 have been recalled due to the risk of an engine compartment fire while driving. Dealers will install Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software and replace the engine as necessary at no cost to owners. Letters notifying owners of the recall will be sent out by Feb. 9, 2024.

Additional Significant Recalls

Other notable recalls include 17,970 2023 Ford F-150 and Ford SD F250 through F600 trucks for a potential deactivated air bag risk, 10,984 Hyundai 2024 Kona SUVs for a short circuit possibility, and a variety of 2024 models from General Motors (Chevrolet and GMC) for a risk of car doors opening unexpectedly.

These recent recalls underscore the importance of staying informed about potential safety issues regarding your vehicle. Regularly check the NHTSA’s database for updates to ensure the safety and longevity of your car. If your vehicle is affected, promptly schedule a service appointment with your dealership to rectify the issue.
