Winning Powerball Ticket Sold in Michigan Worth $842M

January 2, 2024

According to the lottery’s website, a lucky Powerball player in Michigan won the $842.4 million New Year’s Day jackpot. A single ticket sold in Michigan matched all six numbers drawn Monday night to win a jackpot worth $842.4 million. The jackpot has a cash value of $425.2 million.

The winning numbers for the Monday night drawing were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49, and red Powerball 1. The Power Play multiplier was 3X. Officials claim the winning ticket was sold at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc in Michigan, per ABC News.

Final ticket sales for this particular Powerball jackpot pushed the total amount that could be won way beyond its earlier estimate of $810 million to $842.4 million. Subsequently, this was the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot and the 10th-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won.

The Powerball jackpot had been growing since mid-October. The Jan. 1 drawing was the 35th drawing of the two-and-a-half-month run.

Even though a single ticket won the jackpot, participating lotteries remind players to check their tickets. There are nine ways to win. These include matching all the correct numbers and the Powerball. Winners can also match all five numbers without the Powerball.

Other combinations include four numbers and the Powerball and four numbers without the Powerball. This pattern continues with three numbers, three numbers and a Powerball, two numbers, two numbers and a Powerball, one number and a Powerball, and just the Powerball.

Nationwide, the Powerball drawing produced more than 1.8 million winning tickets. Players won cash prizes worth a combined $22.7 million.

“What an incredible beginning to the New Year for Powerball!” said Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “In addition to our big jackpot winner, there are hundreds of good causes supported by U.S. lotteries that will receive further funding from this jackpot run. Thank you to our players for making this possible! Happy New Year!”

Historically, this drawing was also the first time a Powerball jackpot won on New Year’s Day since the game started in 1992. The winner’s identity will be unknown until the person contacts the Lottery to claim the prize.
