NRF Names Official Fight Retail Crime Day
October 23, 2023
In response to the escalating retail crime crisis, the National Retail Federation (NRF) is spearheading an initiative called Fight Retail Crime Day, scheduled for Thursday, October 26. On this day, retail leaders will engage in in-person dialogues with Congress members and their staff to lobby for the Combatting Organized Retail Crime Act. If enacted, this act will complement the INFORM Consumers Act that was passed last year with the aim to prevent the sale of illicitly procured goods on online platforms by mandating high-volume third-party sellers to verify their identities.
The proposed Combatting Organized Retail Crime Act aims to create an Organized Retail Crime Coordination Center. This center will enable national and international cross-agency investigations and facilitate the sharing of information by developing sound intelligence on organized retail crime (ORC). As of now, ORC legislation has been enacted in 34 states, according to the NRF. However, considering many of these crimes span across state boundaries, nearly 90% of retailers deem a federal law necessary.
Ahead of Fight Retail Crime Day, the NRF will conduct a webinar on Wednesday, October 18, at 2 p.m. The webinar aims to educate retailers, public officials, and other interested stakeholders about the multi-faceted strategies employed by the NRF to counter organized retail crime.
