State Officials Want Shein To Prove It Doesn’t Use Forced Labor Before It Goes Public

16 U.S. state attorneys general have sent a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler, urging the agency to ensure that fast-fashion retailer Shein can independently verify that it doesn’t use forced labor before it’s allowed to go public. The letter highlights concerns about Shein’s core business practices, particularly accusations that the company used forced labor from China’s Xinjiang region. Shein has been facing increased scrutiny, including being under investigation by the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, and the company has been taking steps to address these concerns, including testing its cotton supply and discontinuing sourcing cotton from China altogether.
