Delta Passengers Stranded in Remote Canadian Town

December 13, 2023

More than 270 passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit found themselves amid a travel nightmare. Their flight was forced to divert to Goose Bay, Newfoundland, due to an in-flight emergency involving a mechanical issue.

The landing was initially scheduled to land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. However, passengers spent the night at a remote military base instead.

The flight departed on time from Amsterdam on Sunday, Dec. 10, and was headed to Detroit when it landed in Goose Bay out of an abundance of caution. The Associated Press reported, “Crew duty times were impacted due to weather and runway conditions at the Goose Bay airport causing the airport to suspend operations. Delta sent additional aircraft to Goose Bay to bring customers to their final destination Monday.”

The passengers experienced a 12-hour delay in Goose Bay before a relief flight arrived. However, their misfortune continued as the pilot of the relief flight exceeded legal duty hours. Icing at the airport also compounded the existing issues, leading to a temporary shutdown of flights.

The passengers were seen boarding their flight to Detroit around 2 p.m. Monday. They were expected to land at DTW shortly after 5:30 p.m., more than a full day after they were initially scheduled to land and nearly 36 hours after taking off from Amsterdam.

Goose Bay has just 8,000 residents. The area has the largest population due to its proximity to the most prominent military air base in the Northeast: CFB Goose Bay, which belongs to the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The cause of the mechanical issue that led to the initial diversion to Goose Bay remains unclear. This added to the frustration of the afflicted passengers.

Delta Air Lines reportedly worked with officials in Goose Bay to arrange for the stranded passengers to have food, water, and accommodations for their one-night stay. The airline also says passengers will be compensated for the inconvenience.
