Google Continues Job Cuts in Its Advertising Team
January 17, 2024
Google, the multinational technology company, is reshaping its workforce. Confirming recent reports, it is releasing hundreds of employees from its advertising sales team. This action follows similar measures implemented just days ago, which left a significant number of members from Google’s hardware and central engineering teams without jobs. Google Assistant contributors were also impacted.
Google’s decision to slash jobs is part of a larger restructuring strategy, specifically aimed at improving its service to small and medium-sized businesses. To enhance client support, Google is broadening the range of customer accounts taken care of by the team. This not only indicates a shift in prioritization but also anticipates increased recruitment this year.
The company sincerely acknowledges the impact of this restructuring on its employees. It has stated that those affected by the changes aren’t being left to fend for themselves. Employees who’ve lost their roles in this reshuffling will have the opportunity to apply for open positions within Google.
Notably, this wave of job cuts affects a variety of product teams. The creators behind Google’s Nest, Pixel, and Fitbit devices, as well as the augmented reality team, have been hit hard. It seems no department is immune to this organizational shakeup.
The layoffs are not a new trend within Google. Just last week, the company trimmed its workforce by letting go of several hundred jobs within its hardware, central engineering, and Google Assistant teams. This was part of a broader strategy for the company to streamline its operations, become more efficient, and realign resources to top-priority product domains.
In January 2023, Google made an even more significant reduction to its workforce. Approximately 12,000 jobs were eliminated, leading to a 6% reduction in the tech giant’s total workforce.
Google’s recent job cuts are not random decisions but part of a planned reconfiguration to better assist smaller businesses. The company reassures that it’s a responsible investment in its future, gearing up for significant opportunities ahead and promising future growth in hiring. This restructuring suggests that Google is focused on long-term sustainability and growth, conforming to strategic priorities while acknowledging the impact on its personnel.
