Some Americans Will Get a Rare Extra Social Security Check This Month
May 1, 2024
Some Americans may get a rare extra social security check on the last day of May, though it doesn’t mean they will receive extra money.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients nationwide are usually paid by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on the first day of the month — unless it falls on a holiday or weekend. For the month of May, SSI recipients will receive their June payment on the final day of the month, May 31, because June 1 falls on a Saturday.
The back-to-back deposits do not mean retirees are receiving extra money. It’s just an early payment for the following month.

According to a schedule of payments on the Social Security Administration’s website, this quirk will occur two more times this year, in August and November.
- May (June): Friday, May 31
- July: Monday, 1st of the month
- August: Thursday, 1st of the month
- August (September): Friday, August 30
- October: Tuesday, 1st of the month
- November: Friday, 1st of the month
- November (December): Friday, November 29
All other Social Security payments will be dispersed on Wednesdays throughout the month, according to the recipient’s birth date, in line with the usual schedule of payments. Those with birthdays that fall between the first and 10th of their birth month will receive their payment on Wednesday, May 8.
Claimants who have a birthday between the 11th and 20th will receive their monthly amount on May 15, and anyone born between the 21st and 31st of any month will have their benefits paid on May 22.
The amount one receives from Social Security is determined by their lifetime earnings. Per the official SSA website, the maximum benefit depends on the age you retire. For example, if someone retires at full retirement age in 2024, your maximum benefit would be $3,822. However, if you retire at age 62 in 2024, your maximum benefit would be $2,710. If you retire at age 70 in 2024, your maximum benefit would be $4,873, it calculates.
