GM Axes Budget-Friendly Trim for Hummer EV
April 9, 2024
In October 2020, General Motors (GM) made waves with the launch of the GMC Hummer EV, a vehicle that boasted impressive specifications and size. Despite its grandeur, the starting price of just $80,000 for the base EV2 trim seemed reasonable. However, recent reports suggest that GM has decided to pull the plug on this trim.
At the unveiling of the Hummer EV, GM announced that the base EV2 trim wouldn’t hit the market until Spring 2024, a wait of over three years. Although not lacking in power with its anticipated two electric motors producing 625 horsepower and 7,400 pound-feet of torque, the EV2 trim fell short in range at just 250 miles per charge and lacked features like Crabwalk, four-wheel steering, and adaptive air suspension.
According to GM Authority, industry sources have confirmed the cancellation of the base EV2 trim. While the limited availability of the Hummer EV may not make this decision entirely unexpected, it is nonetheless disappointing, as the EV2 trim was positioned as the most affordable option for the all-electric pickup truck. Without it, the Hummer EV may remain a niche vehicle with stagnant production and delivery figures.
GM’s quarterly report revealed that only 2,028 units of the Hummer EV were delivered in Q4 2023, comprising 825 pickups and 1,203 SUVs. Despite its modest sales, the Hummer EV has managed to capture attention, exemplified by the $500,000 auction bid for the first-ever Hummer EV SUV and GM Defense’s unveiling of a tactical version.
Known for its association with excess, the Hummer brand underwent a transformation with the shift to electric power. However, observations from the EV community suggest that the Hummer EV still carries traces of its predecessor’s extravagance. Charging tests have revealed significant bills, echoing the brand’s history of opulence.
The cancellation of the EV2 trim underscores GM’s strategic decisions in positioning the Hummer EV. As it navigates the electric vehicle market, the brand must balance accessibility with maintaining its allure in a landscape increasingly defined by sustainability and affordability.
