Walmart has removed guns and ammunition from its sales floors due to isolated incidents of “civil unrest,” according to CNBC. The retailer will continue selling the items in the stores that carry them, which account for approximately half its footprint.
“We have seen some isolated civil unrest and as we have done on several occasions over the last few years, we have moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers,” said Walmart in a statement.
In September 2019, the retail giant pulled short-barrel rifle ammunition from its shelves, discontinued sales of handgun ammunition and stopped all handgun sales chainwide in response to two shootings at its stores. Walmart also banned customers from carrying firearms in stores located in open carry states unless law enforcement officers are present, though the retailer’s concealed carry policy remained the same.
