Biden Administration Puts the Final Nail in the Coffin for Incandescent Light Bulbs

August 3, 2023

The Biden administration has completed the phase-out of incandescent light bulbs, a process that began with the Energy Independence and Security Act in 2007. The final stage of the rollout ended, requiring retailers to enforce the ban on incandescent and halogen bulbs, while encouraging the sale of more energy-efficient options. This move is expected to save consumers nearly $3 billion per year on their utility bills and reduce carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years. Exceptions to the ban include various specific light bulb types, and the administration is also considering increasing the energy efficiency standard to over 120 lumens per watt for the most common bulbs.
