Lidl has launched a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles and aluminium cans in its stores in Ireland.

Deposit return scheme

The reverse vending machines at its store in Glenageary, a Dublin suburb, will accept cans and bottles bought at Lidl and other retailers in return for vouchers that can be redeemed in the store.

For each item deposited, customers will get a voucher for 10 cents, up to a maximum of two euros.

The machine can collect and process up to 17,000 bottles or cans each week and similar schemes will be set up in Lidl’s 170 stores across Ireland.

Deposit return schemes are being set up in the UK as well.

Scottish convenience store are being encouraged to sign up with Circularity Scotland for a scheme to be launched in summer 2022.

However, the deposit return scheme in England and Wales has been delayed until 2024.
