Aldi is using staff to experiment with using checkout-free shopping in one of its London stores.

The system uses a smartphone app that can be scanned on entering the store, allowing customers to pick up their shopping and walk out without needing to go to a till.

Shortly after they leave the store customers receive an e-mail receipt and are charged automatically.

The supermarket says that staff are testing the system and that trials using members of the public will follow. It has not revealed which store it is using.

Giles Hurley, Aldi’s chief cxecutive in the UK and Ireland, said: “We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings.”

Last year Aldi launched click-and-collect, which is now available in more than 200 stores.
